Due to the influence of active atmospheric fronts and cyclones, weather was unstable with sufficient fluctuations in air temperature from 1st to 10th of August in Ukraine. In the first half of the ten-day period the average daily air temperature was 3-8 °С below the norm; in the last days of the ten-day period it was 3-7 °С above the norm. During the ten-day period there were heavy rains with squalls and hail. The greatest amount of precipitation was observed on August 3rd-4th in the southern and eastern regions when an active cyclone moved from the south-west to the east.
The average ten-day air temperature in the north was from 16.8 °С to 22.0 °С in the south of the country. The maximum air temperature in the warmest days increased to 30-34 °C.
In the southern, eastern (with the exception of Kharkiv), Dnipropetrovsk and Kirovograd regions the greatest amount of precipitation was observed – from 2 to 7 decade norms (24-67 mm). In the Volyn, Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Rivne and Kharkiv regions – 86-153% of the norm (16-29 mm). In the rest of the territory, the ten-day rainfall amounted to 55-75% of the norm (11-17 mm), in the Poltava and Ternopil to regions – 40-50% of the norm (6-11 mm).
Low air temperatures, especially cold nights (6-9 °C) in the northern, eastern and central regions were unfavorable for the completion of the vegetation of corn, sunflower, soybeans, the biological minimum of which is 12-15 °C.
Due to adverse agrometeorological conditions during the formation, filling and ripening of winter wheat grains in the Cherkasy, Sumy, Chernigiv, Lviv, in many areas of the Rivne, Volyn, Vinnytysa, Poltava, some areas of the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Transcarpathian, Zhytomyr and Kyiv regions (about 35% of the area) grain was formed with a reduced level of yield qualities. However, in some areas of the Odessa, Kherson, Donetsk, Chernivtsi and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, winter wheat grain is estimated to have high yield qualities.
Corn in most areas has reached milky and waxy ripeness. The condition of the crops is mostly good.
The formation of baskets and seed ripening continued in sunflower during the ten-day period. In some areas of the southern, Dnipropetrovsk and Cherkasy regions sunflower seeds acquired harvest ripeness. The diameter of the basket ranged from 13 to 24 cm.
