During the first ten-day period of December, the weather was heterogeneous throughout the country – on the Left Bank it was very cold with air temperature deviations from the norm by 4-6 °C on the coldest days, on the Right Bank the air temperatures were slightly below the norm. On some nights, the air temperature dropped to minus 10-13 °C.
The average regional air temperature for a ten-day period in most of the country was 1.2-3.0 °C, in the Luhansk region by 4.3 °C below normal, in the western (except Transcarpathia), Zhytomyr, Vinnytsya, Odesa and Kherson regions – close to the norm, in Transcarpathia – 1.8 °C above the norm and ranged from minus 5.9 °C in the east to plus 0.7 °C in Transcarpathia.
The minimum air temperature in most of the country dropped to minus 9-13 °С, in the Volyn, Ternopil, Chernivtsi and Kherson regions – to minus 6-8 °С.
Within 1-3 days, in the southern districts of the Odesa region within 4-6 days there were slight precipitations in the form of drizzle, rain, sleet and snow. The average regional number in most regions ranged from 5 to 25% of the ten-day norm (1-5 mm), in the northern, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Vinnytsya, Ternopil, Chernivtsi and Khmelnytsky regions – 29-69% of the norm (4-9 mm). Most precipitation, due to significant rains in some areas, fell on average in the Odessa region – 17 mm or 131% of the ten-day norm. In most areas of the eastern, Zaporozhzhya and Dnipropetrovsk regions there was no precipitation at all.
As of December 10, in many areas of the Sumy, Chernihiv, some areas of the Kyiv, Poltava, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Kharkiv, Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Volyn regions, snow cover with a height of only 1-5 cm was observed, in some places in Sumy region it was 6-9 cm, and in the rest of the territory there was no snow in the fields.
During the first ten-day period of December in most areas winter crops were in a state of winter dormancy, in the southern regions – they were not deep. At the beginning of the ten-day period, due to a decrease in the average daily air temperature to negative values and in the fields of the southern, Poltava and Dnipropetrovsk regions, the termination of the growing season of winter crops in the tillering phase was noted. Threats for overwintering of winter crops and fruit crops were not observed. However, in the Sumy, Kharkiv and Luhansk regions, a short-term decrease in the minimum temperature at the depth of the tillering node to minus 9-10 °C could negatively affect the wintering of underdeveloped plants of winter barley and rapeseed. In the rest of the territory, the minimum soil temperature at the depth of the tillering node of winter crops (3 cm) decreased to plus 1 °С – minus 5 °С, and in the eastern, northeastern, Poltava, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporozhzhya regions – to minus 6-8 °C.
