In the third ten-day period of May it rained throughout Ukraine, heavy rains, hail, thunderstorms were observed, and there was an increase in wind. In the highlands of the Carpathians and in some places in the mountainous regions of Transcarpathia, wet snow and snow fell and snow cover formed. Frost on the surface of the soil and at a height of 2 cm above the surface was observed almost throughout the territory. Cloudy weather prevailed, the duration of sunshine was significantly less than normal. The average regional ten-day air temperature turned out to be 2.6-4.5 °C below normal and ranged from 10.7 °C in the west to 14.6 °C in the south.
Precipitation of varying amounts and intensities was observed for 4-9 days throughout the country. Their average regional number for was mainly 155-200% of the norm, in the northern, Rivne, Khmelnitsky, Poltava, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Odesa regions – 215-305% of the norm (from 35 to 72 mm). In the Luhansk and Kherson regions the average rainfall in the region was close and somewhat higher for the ten-day norm; in the Transcarpathian region it did not exceed 70% of the norm – 20-23 mm. In some places of the Chernihiv, Poltava and Kharkiv regions, the amount of precipitation exceeded by 8-27 mm the largest amount of precipitation in the third ten-day period of May during the observation period since 1961.
The cool weather was quite favorable or satisfactory for the vegetation of winter and early spring crops, which are less demanding for heat. The absence of high air temperatures led to the formation of a full-fledged ear. In many areas, thanks to the May rains, despite the harsh conditions in the fall and in March-April, a high yield prospect of these crops appeared. Under later crops, due to precipitation moisture reserves in the soil formed at a sufficient and optimal level. The condition of the crops is mostly good and satisfactory, in some areas of the southern regions it is unsatisfactory, in some places in the Odesa region there was a complete death of spring barley crops (M Serbka). In the southern and central regions, crop damage by agricultural pests was noted. In oats, depending on the timing of sowing, the formation of the lower node of the straw, tillering, the 3rd leaf, and the formation of nodal roots were noted. Plant height was from 10 to 40 cm. Plant condition is good and satisfactory.
