Anticyclonic weather prevailed in the country during the first ten days of August – warm, hot on some days, and almost dry. Average daily air temperatures on the warmest days exceeded the climatic norm by 4-6 °С, during the day the maximum air temperature in the southern half of the country reached 35-39 °С. Dry wind phenomena were observed for 1-9 days.
The average regional ten-day air temperature in the Sumy region was close to the norm, in the western, Zhytomyr, Odesa, Mykolayiv and Kherson regions – by 2.1-3.1 °С, in the rest of the territory – by 1.1-2.0 °С above the norm and ranged from 19.9 °C in the north to 24.8 °C in the south of the country. The maximum air temperature on the warmest days increased to 30-35 °С, in the southern and Dnipropetrovsk regions – up to 36-39 °С. For 1-7 days it exceeded 30 °С. In the southern, Dnipropetrovsk, in places in Vinnytsya, Kirovograd, Donetsk and Kharkiv regions within 1-3 days the maximum air temperature reached and exceeded 35 °C.
Minor precipitation was noted for 1-3 days.
Agrometeorological conditions during the ten-day period were mostly unfavorable in terms of their impact on crops. Reduction of night air temperatures to 7-9 °С at the beginning of the ten-day period (in some areas of the northern, central, western and eastern regions), and further increase in maximum air temperatures up to 30 °С and higher, high soil temperatures at a depth of 10 cm and the lack of effective rainfall had a negative impact on the growing season of late crops, especially garden crops and root crops. At the same time, for the completion of the harvest, the accumulation of sugars in fruits and berries, conditions were favorable. Deficit or complete absence of precipitation caused further development of soil drought. In many areas of the central and southern regions, the tilth top and meter-long soil layers were dry or almost dry.
