In the first ten days of February, the weather in Ukraine was determined by very active synoptic processes associated with the movement of a series of cyclones across the country. In most areas difficult weather conditions were observed. In the northern half of the country the movement of southwestern cyclones caused a decrease in average daily temperatures on cold days to 6-9 °C below normal, and a decrease in the minimum air temperature to minus 17-23 °C. At the same time, it was much warmer in the south and east of the country – the maximum temperature on warm days increased to 7-10 °C, in the extreme southern regions – up to 11-17 °C. The average air temperature in this territory for a ten-day period turned out to be significantly higher than normal. The amount of precipitation over a ten-day period almost over the entire territory exceeded the ten-day norm by 1.5-4.5 times; in many areas of the central and western regions, the monthly or more precipitation rate fell over a ten-day period. The establishment or restoration of snow cover was a favorable factor before the next cold snap.
The average regional air temperature for a ten-day period in the Sumy, Poltava, Cherkasy, Vinnytsya, Chernivtsi, Khmelnytsky, Ternopil and Lviv regions was close to the norm and in the northern, Rivne, Volyn regions it was 1.5-2.3 °C below normal, in the rest of the country – 1.7-5.0 °C above the norm and ranged from minus 8 °C in the north to plus 2.7 °C in the south of the country. The minimum air temperature dropped to minus 13-18 °С, and in the Volyn, Kyiv, Chernigov, Sumy, Cherkasy and Poltava regions – to minus 19-23 °С, in the eastern, Transcarpathian, Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil and Donetsk regions – down to minus 7-12 °С.
Precipitation of varying amounts and intensity in the form of rain, sleet and snow was recorded throughout the country. In most of the country, the amount of precipitation over a ten-day period ranged from 230 to 389% (from 23 to 62 mm), in the Kherson, Zaporozhzhya, Donetsk and Ivano-Frankivsk regions – 120-191% of the ten-day norm (12-21 mm).
As of February 10, in most of the country the height of the snow cover reached 11-31 cm. In the eastern, Dnipropetrovsk, in some areas of the southern, Poltava, Kirovohrad, Vinnytsya, Khmelnytsky, Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Transcarpathian regions the snow height did not exceeded 1-10 cm, and in many areas of the southern regions there was no snow on the fields until the end of the ten-day period.
From the beginning of winter and as of February 10, the weather conditions for overwintering winter crops in Ukraine were generally satisfactory, which is confirmed by the results of growing samples of wintering crops taken by meteorological stations from fields on January 25, 2021.
