Due to the weather conditions prevailing during the first ten-day of May, imhomogeneous agrometeorological conditions related to the amount, intensity of precipitation and temperature regime characteristics were observed in Ukraine. In general, for most of the planted areas the conditions were favorable for all spring crops due to sufficient moisture content and nearly optimal level of air and soil temperatures for most of the spring crops.
In the eastern and central regions, where the weather with moderate cold fluctuations was predominantly moderately warm (close to norm), there was imhomogeneous precipitation that maintained moisture in the soil under all crops at a sufficient and optimal level, there was no frost, and agrometeorological conditions for growth and development of crops were assessed as favorable.
However, in some areas of these regions there was humidity deterioration of both the tilth top and the meter-deep soil layer due to cumulative (from February to May 10) rainfall deficiency, which in some regions reached almost 50%.
As of May 10, agrometeorological conditions on most areas of the Odessa and on separate areas of Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions remained rather complicated, where until then there has been a long period without effective precipitation.
The further development and spread of drought was prevented by relatively low air temperatures.
In the western regions, favorable conditions for the initial growth and development of early spring and industrial crops and winter flowering of rape prevailed due to heavy rainstorms, low air and soil temperatures (on separate days below 5°), frostbite, winds and waterlogged soil. Rains and waterlogged upper soil layer prevented and at times made it impossible to conduct fieldwork in this region. Conditions for growing winter crops and perennial grasses were rather satisfactory.
The reserves of productive moisture in the tilth top and meter-deep soils depending on the amount of rain and soil type were at the level of optimal and excessive, most drained areas were in the Chernivtsi, Khmelnytsky, Lviv, Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. In addition, in the western regions the lack of heat was a disadvantageous factor for the overwhelming majority of crops.
