In early September warm weather prevailed in the most of Ukraine without significant rainfall. In the first ten-day period, air-soil drought continued and dry wind were noted.
The average regional air temperature over the ten-day period was 2.6-4.1 °C higher than normal and amounted to 17.6-21.7 °C. The maximum air temperature increased to 30-34 °C, and up to 35 °C in the Odessa, Mykolayiv and Kherson areas.
Slight precipitation was observed for 1-4 days almost throughout the country, with the exception of the Zhytomyr, Luhansk and Kyiv regions. In most regions, the amount per ten-day period ranged from 1 to 5 mm, in many areas of the Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Mykolayiv, certain areas of Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Odessa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk regions there was no precipitation at all. In the Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions, the ten-day period rainfall was close to normal; in the Donetsk, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Transcarpathian regions it amounted to 45-70% of the norm (8-15 mm).
In separate areas of the Kherson, Kharkiv, Luhansk and Sumy regions sowing of winter wheat began. As of September 10, the reserves of productive moisture in a 0-20 cm soil layer under winter crops and in areas designated for their sowing in most of the country were unsatisfactory and did not exceed 10 mm, in many areas of the Odessa, Mykolayiv and some areas of Zaporizhzhya, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovograd, Poltava and Kharkiv regions the tilth-top soil was completely dry.
Planting of winter rapeseed continued; seedlings and the formation of a leaf bud were noted on previously sown areas. The condition of the plants was mostly good. Corn grain has reached waxy or full ripeness. Harvesting began, sometimes plants were harvested for green fodder. 1-2 heads were formed on one plant, the number of grains in one head ranged from 285 to 775, the weight of 1000 grains – 200-490 g.
Harvesting of sunflower seeds continued.
