Meteorological conditions of the second ten-day period of December 2020

During the second ten-day period of December, warm weather prevailed in Ukraine with fogs, rain, rains and sleet. Average daily air temperatures on the warmest days were 3-6 °C above normal.

The average regional air temperature for a ten-day period throughout the country was 1.0-3.9 °C, in Khmelnytsky, Chernivtsi and Transcarpathian regions – 4.1-5.0 °C above the norm, in the Luhansk region – close to the norm and ranged from minus 2.6 °C in the extreme east to plus 3.2-3.6 °C in Transcarpathia and Odesa region. On warm days, the maximum air temperature rose to 1-6 °C, in the Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Transcarpathian – up to 7-9 °C, in Odesa and Kherson regions – to 10-13 °C. most of the country’s territory decreased to minus 1-6 °С, in the eastern, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Chernihiv and Sumy regions – to minus 7-12 °С.

During the ten-day period, precipitation in the form of drizzle, fog, rain, snow and sleet was recorded throughout the country.

Their average regional amount in the eastern, Zaporozhzhya, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Ivano-Frankivsk, Transcarpathian and Volyn regions ranged from 19 to 50% of the ten-day norm (from 4 to 10 mm), in the rest of the territory the ten-day precipitation ranged from 53 to 79 % of the norm (9-15 mm). The average regional amount of precipitation was close to normal in the Odesa, Vinnytsya and Khmelnitsky regions (14-15 mm). Most precipitation over a ten-day period was noted in the Chernivtsi region – an average of 19 mm or 173% of the norm.

As of December 20, in some areas of the eastern, Zaporozhzhya, Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions, snow cover was observed with a height of 1-3 cm, in some places in Luhansk, Sumy and Chernihiv regions it was 7-15 cm. On the rest of the territory there was no snow on the fields.

During the second ten-day period of December winter crops were in a state of shallow winter dormancy. Due to the increase in daytime air temperatures up to 5-12 °С, slow growth processes were observed in the southern regions. Threats for overwintering of winter crops and fruit crops were not observed.
