Meteorological conditions of the second ten-day period of December 2021

Very warm (for mid-December) weather prevailed in Ukraine during the second ten-day period. On the warmest days, the average daily temperature exceeded the norm by 4-8 °С, only in the western regions the temperature background was closer than the norm, but above it. Significant temperature contrasts were observed across the territory.

The average regional air temperature for a ten-day period in most regions turned out to be 3.0-4.2 °C. In the Volyn, Rivne, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattya regions it was 1.3-1.8 °C above the norm, and in the Lviv area – close to it, and ranged from minus 0.1 °C to plus 3.8 °C.

Precipitation during the ten-day period in the form of fogs, fog, rain, snow and sleet was observed throughout the country. The average regional number in the Transcarpathian and Zaporizhya regions was 70-79% of the ten-day norm (from 11 to 19 mm), and in the Volyn, Poltava and Kyiv regions – 138-186% of the norm (22-26 mm). The average regional amount of precipitation was close to the norm in the eastern, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy and Chernihiv regions (11-19 mm). In the rest of the territory, the amount of precipitation for a ten-day period ranged from 208 to 400% of the norm (23-51 mm). Most precipitation was recorded in the Ivano-Frankivsk region – an average of 53 mm or 444% of the ten-day norm.

As of December 20, in the eastern, in some areas of the northern, western, Poltava, Kirovohrad and Vinnytsya regions, a snow cover 1-3 cm high was observed, in places in the Luhansk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Zhytomyr and Transcarpathian regions from 5 to 11 cm, in the highlands of the Carpathians – 21-93 cm. There was no snow in the rest of the territory.

Due to the warm weather for December, in many areas of the southern and nearby regions of the central regions, slow growth processes continued on winter crops until the end of the ten-day period, and changes in phase development were observed. So, thanks to the warm and optimal soil moisture, most of the crops in these areas reached the tillering phase in mid-December. In other areas, crops were at rest. The precipitation that fell in December was extremely important and was assimilated by the soil, because there was no freezing. Threatening phenomena for overwintering of winter and fruit crops were not observed. On the warmest days, the average daily temperature exceeded the norm by 4-8 °С, only in the western regions the temperature background was closer than the norm, but above it. Significant temperature contrasts were observed across the territory.
