In the second ten-day period of January an active cyclone moved through the territory of Ukraine, which caused precipitation of varying intensity in most regions, blizzards, ice and the establishment of snow cover of various heights almost throughout the entire territory.
The average regional air temperature for a ten-day period turned out to be close or 1.1-3.3 °С lower than the norm and amounted to minus 5.4-9.9 °С, in Chernihiv and Sumy regions – to minus 11.2-11.6 °С. In the Transcarpathian region, the average regional air temperature was minus 3.6 °C, which is 1.1 °C higher than the norm.
The minimum air temperature dropped to minus 21-26 °С, in the Zaporizhzhya, Luhansk and Sumy regions – to minus 27-30 °С, in the Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi regions – to minus 15-20 °С.
Precipitation was noted within 1-7 days in the form of snow, sleet, and in places with rain. The average regional ten-day rainfall in Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Odesa, Zhytomyr, Rivne, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Transcarpathian regions was close to the norm, in the eastern, Zaporizhzhya, Volyn and Lviv regions it was 129-177% of the norm (from 8 up to 23 mm). In the rest of the country, the ten-day rainfall was 42-77% of the norm (5-10 mm).
As of January 20, in the eastern, Sumy, Zhytomyr, in most areas of the western, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, Kirovohrad, Poltava, in some areas of the Vinnytsya, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Mykolayiv and Odesa regions the height of the snow cover was from 6 to 21 cm, in the highlands of the Carpathians – 40-45 cm. In the rest of the country, the snow height did not exceed 3-5 cm, in some areas of Odesa and Kherson there was no snow in the fields.
