The third January ten-day period in terms of average temperature was one of the warmest, in many regions – warm, during the observation period from 1961.
The average regional air temperature over a ten-day period in the western, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsya and Odesa regions turned out to be 3.9-5.5 °C, in the rest of the country – 5.6-8.1 °C above the norm and ranged from minus 1 °C from in the north-east to plus 2.6-5.3 °C in the southern regions.
The minimum air temperature decreased in the western (except Volyn), Zhytomyr, Vinnytsya, Odesa, Mykolayiv and Kherson regions to minus 7-13 °С, and in Volyn, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Poltava, Cherkasy regions – to minus 14-19 °С; in the Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya – up to minus 21-24 ° C, in the Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv – up to minus 27-32 °C. The maximum air temperature rose to 8-14 °С.
Precipitation for 2-8 days, in the form of rain, snow and sleet, was noted throughout the country. In most regions, the amount of precipitation ranged from 136 to 295% of the ten-day norm, in the Poltava, Kirovohrad, Mykolayiv and Odesa regions – from 308 to 567% of the norm (from 18 to 54 mm). In the Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Khmelnytsky, Zaporizhzhya, Donetsk and Luhansk regions the ten-day rainfall was close and slightly less than 4 normal (7-15 mm). The least amount of precipitation was noted in Ivano-Frankivsk region – 36% of the ten-day norm or 4 mm.
The daily maximum of precipitation in many areas of the Mykolayiv, Odesa, certain areas of the Cherkasy region reached 20-52 mm (from 1 to 3 ten-day norms).
As of January 31, in most regions, the snow height ranged from 6 to 27 cm. In the eastern, Zaporizhzhya, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, in some areas of the western, Poltava, Kirovohrad and Mykolayiv regions there was no snow on the fields or its height did not exceed 2-5 cm .
In the third ten-day period of January winter crops were in a state of winter dormancy. Only in some fields of the Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad and Cherkasy regions there was a renewal of the growth processes of winter crops.
