Moderate and heavy rains, sometimes with storms, thunderstorms, and hail lasted for 3-5 days almost all over Ukraine, while in the Volyn, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Transcarpathian regions it lasted for 7-9 days. The rainfall for the ten-day period on the larger territory of the country was close to the norm, but it ranged from 159 to 227% of the ten-day norm in the Lugansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya, Kirovograd, Poltava, Transcarpathian, Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.
The steady transition of the average daily air temperatures over 15 °C in most of the country took place in the second ten-day period of May, in the eastern, some districts of the Zaporizhzhya, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava and Sumy regions – in the first ten-day period of May, and in the western regions – 10-20 days earlier than average long-term periods.
The air temperature in the warmest days increased to 30-34 °C, and in the western, Zhytomyr, Kyiv and Vinnytsia regions – to 27-29 °C.
The average regional precipitation in most regions was 123-199% of the norm.
In the Odessa and Mykolaiv regions May precipitation was 63-70% of the norm.
Although in many areas of the western part of the country there was an overabundance of precipitation, in general weather conditions were favorable for the growth and development of all crops.
In May, excessive rains (1.5 to 3 month norm) were observed in the Lviv, Volyn, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytsky, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Transcarpathian and Rivne regions, which led to the overabundant moisture of the soil. Thus, it was impossible to conduct field work, in the lowered places in the fields long stagnation of water was observed, creating the risk of cereals collapse.
Growth and development of crops:
Winter crops. At the end of May, the massive ear formation and blossom of winter wheat and rye were observed.
The state of crops is satisfactory and good, although in some areas of the eastern regions there was a deterioration of the state to unsatisfactory.
Formation of pods continued on winter rape.
The condition of crops was predominantly good.
Corn, depending on the dates of sowing, was in the phases of 3-5 leaves, sometimes 7-9 leaves, in late seeding of sprouts was observed. The condition of crops is mostly good. Locally damaged leaf by hail was observed in the northern regions.
Sunflower. The condition of crops is mostly good and satisfactory.
