The average daily air temperature in March in Ukraine ranged from 2.8 to 5.0 °С. In Kherson, Nikolaev, Odessa, Ternopil, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi and Transcarpathian regions it was higher than the national average and ranged from 5.1 to 8.5 °С. March was one of the warmest in recent years. Similar temperature conditions were observed in 2016, 2007 and 2002.
During the warmest days, the maximum air temperature ranged from 19 to 23 °C. The minimum air temperature during the coldest nights was down to minus 8-11 °C; in the north of the Sumy region – to minus 14-16 °C.
The early spring increase in average daily temperature by 5 °C took place in the southern and most western regions in the first ten days of March, which is 14-30 days earlier than the average long-term indicators.
In the rest of the country, the transition took place in the second or third ten-day period of March, which is close to and somewhat earlier than the average long-term indicators.
In February-March, 30-40% of the average precipitation fell on most of the country, while in many areas of the southern regions – only 20-25% of the norm.
According to agrometeorological data based on the results of periodic spring surveys of winter crops, most areas are in good and excellent condition. The percentage of damaged plants does not exceed 3-5%.
Soil moisture
As of the end of March, the reserves of productive moisture of the soil under winter crops were sufficient in most areas.
Growth and development of crops
The condition of rye, barley and wheat crops is mostly good and satisfactory. Only in some fields of the southern regions winter wheat was damaged by agricultural pests.
The condition of winter rapeseed crops is mostly satisfactory.
